Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast has been offering medical students deaf awareness and sign language training for almost twenty years. Professor Jayne Woodside, working with James Bailey from Interpreting Works, currently leads the Sign Language and Communication Tactics Student Selected Component module.

In addition, they also have incorporated deaf awareness training into the Year 2 Communications Skills Module, in the session "The consultation: diversity & complexity".

This award-winning provision has recently resulted in the establishment of a student society, Sign to support students through both casual BSL lessons as well as formal qualifications in BSL.

This website provides users of British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) a curated series of videos from around the UK and Ireland for some of the common healthcare issues they or their family may face.

Queen’s University did not make the videos and cannot take responsibility for the information they contain but we have brought them together to make it easier for sign language users to access health information. They are all in one place so you don’t need to search lots of different websites.
